A Kenyan legislator was hurt after an improvised explosive device exploded outside a mosque on Friday. Five people died in the blast. The MP, Yusuf Hassan, who represents Kamukunji constituency in nairobi, was injured in the leg after the IED was hurled at him. Two people died on the spot, while three more died while undergoing treatment at the kenyatta national Hospital. Witnesses said that the MP was talking to a group of youtuhs outside the mosque when the iIED was hurled at him. he had just attended the evening prayers.
The blast occured at the EastIeigh area, which is densely populated by ethnic Somalis. There have been romours that there are non-Kenyan Somalis living in this area. mmediately the blast went off, there riots broke out, as roudy youths looted shops and home, and baricaded roads. This called for the intervesnion of antiriot police who shot in the air to disperse the youths.
Earlir on, another blast had occured within the area on Thursday that left eight people seriously injured. A fortnight ago, eastleigh witnessed violent protest that left one person dead, after a grenade was hurled at a minibus. Six people died in the incident. Youths from the neighbouring slums descended on eastleigh and attacked ethnic Somalis, whom they claimed were habouring terrorists in their midts.
