The killing of opposition supporters in Zimbabwe by Zanu PF youth militias, political activists and war veterans continue to intensify. According to the MDC the death toll has reached an alarming level of 20 so far.

Surprisingly, the perpetrators of violence are not being arrested following a directive from the war veterans that they should not be nabbed as they are preparing the nation for  the Presidential run off which they say. According to them President Mugabe should win to all costs.

Reports continue to show more and more people perceived to be MDC supporters being beaten, abducted, and brutally assaulted and being killed. 20 opposition supporters have been killed  in less than a month under Zanu PF’s crackdown dubbed operation Mavhotera Papi, which means 'whom did you vote for?'

The last two days have seen  five MDC activists being killed by Zanu PF militia including soldiers. Among the deceased are Tabitha Marume of Makoni West in Manicaland was shot and killed by soldiers at Chiwetu Rest Camp. Percy Muchiwa, a teacher in Guruve was on Monday beaten to death by Zanu PF supporters in Bakasa area.

Tenos Manyimo and Bigboy Zhuwawo both of Mbire in Mashonaland Central died on Sunday when they were seriously attacked by Zanu PF militia for being MDC supporters.

Clemence Dube of Poshayi Village in ward 12, was killed in the midlands province after he was assaulted by Zanu PF supporters and war veterans on 28 April. Dube who was an MDC polling agent has since been ferried to Bulawayo for a post mortem.

    Homeless

Apart from that, hundreds of families have been left homeless while others displaced as the violence perpetrated by Zanu PF continue unchecked.

MDC director of elections Tichanzii Gandanga,  was this week found in Chihota , Mashonaland East Province following his abduction on 18 April, 2008 and was severely assaulted and  sustained fractured legs. Also MDC provincial activist for Manicaland province, Knowledge Nyamhuka died in Makoni West following his brutal attack.

Vice-president Thokozani Khupe who visited some provinces to assess the volatile situation said once MDC is in power, they would compensate all those who fall victim to the ravages of the Zanu PF party.

MDC is however pinning its hopes on the UN briefing yesterday that the UN might intervene and reduce the damage being inflicted by the former ruling party Zanu PF.

MDC has for the first time won the majority in parliament against Zanu PF triggering nationwide brutal attacks on opposition supporters as to why they voted against President Mugabe.

It is a pity that humans treat humans inhumanely. The barbaric nature of what is happening in Zimbabwe with Robert Mugabe's regime killing opposition citizens is not a new sadness in Africa. Africans in many African countries have gone through these murderous regimes. Ironically, in the beginning these leaders-turned barbaric are usually elected into office by Africans whom they turn on, torture and kill.

When you hear or experience the massacres of people because of partisan politics, one can only pray that the Africa Union becomes a reality sooner than later. May be when Africa is one country with one federal government and governors of the various states but with one national army, these crazy leaders will be eliminated because the Federal government will not let them kill Africans with impunity like they do.

Zimbabweans, persevere; you will overcome. Remember we Ugandans persevered for over 30 years. More than half a million Ugandans were killed by dictatorial regimes over that period. This is why many fair Ugandans applaude Yoweri K. Museveni for having fought against killer dictators and brought peace, stability and development to the country. He has brough freedom of speech, of association, of press and the right to life based upon the rule of law. This is not to say his regime has all along been perfect, but those who experienced Uganda between 1966 and 1986 know there has been a fundamental positive change in this country. There is no other African country for example where you have as many private radio and television stations as Uganda. This is great achievement.

Some day Zimbabwe and all of Africa will be free when the African Union becomes a reality; may be before that. If only half of the existing African countries ratify the union and form an African Union Army, I am sure they can override those barbaric regimes - in otherwords, the AU should be ready to fight a civil war like the one that was fought in the United States of America. Africa needs strong leaders who have a vision of the future for this continent as a single country.
