US to support Cameroon tackle human trafficking

  1. Elias Ntungwe Ngalame, AfricaNews reporter in Yaounde, Cameroon
The US Ambassador to Cameroon, Robert P.Jackson has revealed the readiness of his government to help Cameroon institute adequate and results-oriented mechanism to curb the ascending rate of human trafficking in the country. The ambassador, who vehemently denounced the practice, pledged the total collaboration of his government to stamp out what he described as one of the worst abuse of human rights in the globe.

Jackson who was speaking to the press after an audience with Cameroon’s minister of social affairs Catherine Bakang Mbock in Yaounde recently frowned at what he described as lesser faire and impunity that makes governance in Cameroon in particular and some African countries in general an uphill task.

He said the apparent porous security especially at the borders and many other factors make the system vulnerable to human trafficking activities.

He lauded the efforts made so far by the government to fight human rights abuse but pointed out that no matter how good the laws of the country were, it will make no sense if they were not being applied to the letter.

The diplomat revealed that his government was already providing aid to the ministry of social affairs in over 25 spheres worth some 13 million fcfa and are looking at more projects for the upcoming year.

“Our focus with the ministry over the years has been on tracking down the growing human trafficking network in the country. The embassy in collaboration with the ministry has been training and educating the public against trafficking and the existing laws and punitive measures against defaulters,” the diplomat cautioned.

He called on the population to work in tandem with the forces of law and order by reporting all suspected cases of human trafficking in the vicinity.

The US ambassadors remarks were corroborated by the coordinator of a civil society organization in Cameroon, ACCDIC , Benard Njonga who recently published a report on the state of human trafficking within the West and Central African region with Cameroon fronting the inhuman operation. He said the report blamed the high criminal activity to poverty and the highly volatile security system in the region.

It should be recalled that a report by a coalition of over 20 civil society organizations in Cameroon in 2010 talked of over 4000 cases of child trafficking that was recorded in the country with the Northwest region and the three Northern regions championing the list. The trend has continued to escalate especially with the porous security and corrupt practices at the borders by the forces of law and order and the customs.

Other aspects discussed by the diplomat and the minister of social affairs dealt with the precarious street children phenomenon in the country especially in Douala and Yaounde. The minister lauded the efforts of some civil society organizations in this aspect but pointed out the need for more concerted action plan by the different stakeholders.
