Journalists have been challenged to effectively disseminate agricultural policies to enhance better food security in the African continent .
Dr Lindiwe Majele Sibanda –Chief Executive Officer and Head of Mission at Food, Agriculture and Natural Resources Policy Network ( FANRPAN), challenged journalists attending a workshop in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania to stimulate thinking and dialogue on issues pertaining to food security.
Dr Shibanda said FANRPAN works with all stakeholders including governments , researchers, farmers, media and other partners toward secure food policy in the continent and urged closer media cooperation in this respect . “We rely on you to take information out and welcome journalists into our network. We expect close partnership and collaboration with the media to ensure better understanding of the various challenges facing the continent”, she said.
She challenged journalists to effectively use all the available media including print, online and voice to enhance better agricultural communications.The interactive training was designed and facilitated by two media experts - Martin van Niekerk and Ben Rootman from South Africa based Junxion Communications, who offered valuable insights and cross-cutting approach on reporting food security.
About twenty agricultural journalists are attending a one day training workshop, ahead of week-long FANRPAN annual food security policy dialogue from September 2-7, 2012. Participating journalists came from several African countries including Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania , South Africa, Zimbabwe, Malawi and Zambia.
Participants said they have learnt valuable ideas and lessons which they would apply during their day to day work. ” The training was very creative and interactive and we gained a lot of knowledge and ideas from this workshop.
