Cote d’Ivoire ALERT: Police arrests newspaper editor

    On the evening of January 31, 2012, Charles Sanga, managing editor of Le Patroite, a pro-Gbagbo daily newspaper, was arrested by officials of the Ivorian National Surveillance Directorate (DST) in Abidjan for refusing to reveal the source of information.

    The newspaper had published a news story on the same day about the invalidation of eleven seats in last year’s parliamentary elections in the country ahead of the official announcement by the Constitutional Council in the evening.

    The Media Foundation for West Africa’s (MFWA) correspondent reported that the authorities had also requested Jean-Claude Coulibaly, the author of the story, to also report to the DST.

    The correspondent said the authorities are accusing the newspaper of “publishing confidential information”.

    Charles Sanga, le Directeur de publication du quotidien Le Patriote, une publication pro-Gbagbo, a été arrêté dans la soirée du 31 janvier 2012 à Abidjan par des éléments de la Direction de la surveillance du territoire (DST) pour avoir refusé de révéler les sources de ses informations.

    Le journal avait publié un article le même jour sur l’invalidation de 11 sièges lors des dernières législatives du pays même avant la déclaration officielle par le Conseil constitutionnel dans la soirée.

    La correspondante de la Fondation pour les Médias en Afrique de l’Ouest (MFWA) a rapporté que les autorités ont également demandé à Jean-Claude Coulibaly, l’auteur de l’article, de se présenter à la DST.

    La correspondante a informé que les autorités reprochent au journal d’avoir « publié des informations confidentielles ».
