5 February 2007 - PANA. In a bid to avoid infections in the blood- letting sport, Uganda Amateur Boxing Federation (UABF) has imposed a mandatory HIV/AIDS testing along side a dope test before commencement of any bout sanctioned by the local governing body.
UABF Vice President Dr. Ntege Ssengendo told PANA Monday the new measure was aimed at protecting boxers in the contact sport.
"This test will not stop in the national open tournament alone. It will be administered during the course of any tournament," Ntege, also an Africa Doping Commission member, told PANA on telephone.
He further revealed that boxers will also be tested for Hepatitis B as well as doping tests, but hastened to add: "There is no cause for alarm. This is meant to curb the spread of HIV/AIDS in boxing."
