Nigeria: 'Ladies prefer male hair dressers'

Female customers prefer male hair dressers to make their hair rather than going for ladies, an owner of a hair dressing business in the Mushin area of Lagos, South West Nigeria said. She said the trend has helped her make more profits.

“If I am here and these boys are here too, they (girls) will like going to boys to do their hair...I don't know what is in their hands o, but they like boys doing their hair,” Mrs Kafilat Yusuf told AfricaNews in Nigeria’s commercial capital.

Yusuf said the gentle approach the males use in making the hair of the opposite sex might be the reason responsible for ladies flocking to the male hair dressers. “Those boys, they make hair gently, when they are doing hair, they cool down to do their hair, that’s why they like boys doing their hair,” she said.

Yemi Tolashe is one of the three male hair dressers working for Mrs Yusuf in her salon. According to a female hair dresser, Tolashe has a good customer relation because he knows how to attend to customers.

“Most customers, when they are passing, when we call them, they don't answer, but since he is a guy, he walks up to them... and at the end the day they turn up to make their hair,” Mary Obinzu, who works in the same salon with Tolashe said.

When AfricaNews sought to speak with Tolashe, he said his three months stay at the salon has been a great learning experience. “I just want to be perfect,” he said with shyness, expressing a sense of fulfilment with the hair dressing trade.
