Kenya: Bananas processed into flour

    Nkanchie banana processing unit was started in Meru, Kenya by a group of 100 members in the year 2009.The main aim of the project is to grid bananas into flour and crisps.The nutritious,healthy flour is then used in preparing porridge, cakes, biscuits, chapatti and ugali.

    According to Judy Ngera the project treasurer, the plant has been doing quite well in the last few months.

    ‘It has not only uplifted the living standards of the residents but has also created job opportunities to many’, she said

    With Meru being the largest zone in Kenya where bananas are planted in large numbers, the market has not being doing well in the recent years and that is why the members through the Government of Kenya decided to establish the unit to curb the situation.
