Kenya embraced Free Primary Education when it was introduced by President Kibaki in 2003. The program then attracted many donors who supported it and it has been going on despite allegations of corruption in the Education industry and many other challenges.
The program was to help the poor in the rural areas to take their children to school and keep them off the streets. The main challenges the parents are facing especially the real poor people in the rural areas is that they cannot afford to buy school uniform for their children. Some children go to school with torn uniforms and their behinds can be seen by anybody. These has led to some students not performing well in class especially the girls who shy away from standing to answer questions in class because of their torn uniforms and these has kept many of the students at home. These is the reason why some students have gone back to the streets.
