Ireland boosts Ethiopia's food safety programme

  1.  The Irish government Friday announced a contribution of 8.5 million euros to Ethiopia's Productive Safety Net Programme aimed at tackling hunger and vulnerability of chronically food insecure households in the east African country.

Irish Aid, Ireland's official programme for development assistance, said the contribution reflected its strong support for Ethiopia's response to the needs of food insecure families.

The Safety Net Programme has been a crucial instrument that provides cash or food in exchange for work on community-based social amenities to people who would otherwise starve and to the disabled who cannot work. Total Irish funding to Ethiopia in 2006 was over 37 million euros. 18 May 2007 - PANA
