EU supports AU with 30m euros

    The European Union has declared a pledge of 30million Euros to assist the African Union Mission in Somalia, sources said on Tuesday.

    The promise was made at a meeting between the African Union and the countries contributing troops in the mission which was held on Monday in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Sources said the meeting also discussed the peace-making efforts in Somalia.

    African Union said in a joint statement after the meeting that EU confirmed the payment of 5.4 million Euro as refund to the AMISOM forces contributing countries. The statement also said: “the next installment of 30 million Euro will follow shortly.”

    4,500 Ugandan and Burundian troops are deployed in Somalia for backing the Somali government.

    The meeting also encouraged other African countries to immediately deploy their forces to AMISOM mission in Somalia. AU asked Djibouti, Ghana, Malawi and Nigeria to send peacekeeping forces to Somalia.
