The unidentified gunmen fired on the Pakistani forces unit on Tuesday afternoon as it was leading a convoy outside Nyala, south of Darfur Capital, The UNAMID mission said.

No injury was reported. The attackers fled the scene after a Unit from Nigerian UNAMID soldiers intervened, force communications chief Kemal Saiki said.

Saiki told Reuters that it is a shame for the rebels to target UNAMID. “They are impartial. They take no sides," he said.

More than 20 UNAMID peacekeepers have been killed in Darfur since the mission moved there in January 2008.

The conflict in Darfur has been going on since 2003 when black African rebels began to take arms against the Sudan government.
