A group of Senegalese students Thursday afternoon went on the rampage in the Senegalese capital of Dakar, threatening to burn down a commercial transport bus they took control of if their grievances were not met.

The Ecole Supérieure Polytechnique de Dakar students have been involved in a series of clashes of with the police. They are protesting against the “uncertain status of their institution and the quality of diplomas the school issues.”
AfricaNews reporter said the institution, recently transferred from the region of Thies to the capital, presently does not have a clear status, and its students are especially confused as to whether it is a public or private institution. They allege that teachers sell diplomas to students, which they say present credibility problem to the institution.
The students are angered by the silence of the authorities over their queries.
They are calling for disciplinary measures against teachers who are found wanting in selling diplomas.
ESP is affiliated with the University of Dakar (Cheikh Anta Diop University), but it has been known to be a private institute with a high training costs compared to other public institutions.
