Morocco expels Swedish ambassador

  1. The Swedish ambassador to Morocco has been expelled for allegedly giving a government document to separatists, AFP said.

In a statement issued by the Morocco’s Foreign Affairs Ministry on Friday, Foreign Minister Taib Fassi Fihri summoned the Swedish diplomat, Michael Odevald, to his office Wednesday to protest what he called an "unacceptable, professional mistake.”

Fihri claimed the Swedish Embassy breached diplomatic protocol by transmitting an official document to officials of Polisario, the ruling party of the exiled Western Sahara government, which is technically at war with Morocco.

Odevald “is due to leave Morocco within hours”, the ministry’s statement mentioned.

The diplomatic row between both countries came up as a Sahrawi (Western Sahara) political prisoner in Morocco is being awarded a prestigious Swedish human rights prize, according to AFP.
