For the past 2 years, there was a food decline mainly due to low production of food crops owing to the disruption of Agricultural activities during post election chaos, unfavorable weather and high cost of Agricultural inputs particularly seeds and fertilizer. Also the failure of short rains last year and this year has resulted to an acute food shortage especially maize.

As a first step the Government has started a programme of granting hybrid seeds and fertilizer to the needy farmers in order to prevent Kenyans from going hungry in the current years. With Agriculture being the main stay of the country's economy the government has also allocated substantial resources to ministries responsible for agriculture, irrigation and regional development.

To promote agricultural sector also the government will enhance the national food reserves through encouragement of individuals and groups to store their produce for further use. Mostly farmer take their produce to the market as soon as they harvest hence leading to food shortage in most of the homes. Meanwhile the government is focusing on new measures of mechanization, irrigation and water harvesting thus hoping to emerge the net exporter of food by the year 2012.
