Epileptic persons should rush to hospital

  1. THE Federation of Disability Organization in Malawi (FEDOMA) has urged epileptic
persons in the country to rush to hospital to seek for medical attention whenever
    they develop epilepsy
Speaking during the National Epilepsy Day on 29th August, the programm Manager for
FEDOMA, Action Amos said an epileptic person need to quickly rush to hospital whenever
She/he develops symptoms of epilepsy so that it is treated while at a tender age

Amos expressed a concern over most persons with epilepsy who waste their time by not visiting the hospital a thing which he said is a threat to their lives
“As an organization we are very worried with some epileptic persons attitude towards epilepsy
they usually run away from seeking a medical support due to what I may describe as unclear reasons. We therefore ask them to refrain from doing that,” he warned.

He described epilepsy as serious neurological conditions caused by unusual electrical activity in the brain and manifests itself in the form of seizures- and its not a disease as what
    most people think.

Levi Mihowa ,Regional Director for Sue Ryder International – Malawi, taking his turn said, epilepsy is un curable, but advised that adherence to treatment and instructions can lead to seizure free life.

However Mihowa disclosed that, epilepsy is a symptom of an abnormality in the brain and if one can treat the cause, one can cure epilepsy through surgery and medications, e.g. tumours and
    cysticercoids.
“Infact I would say that it is curable or un curable, it is much more complicated than that. I can therefore confirm that it is manageable as most patients respond well on medication,” he said.

Mihowa made the comment following the media report which said that one of the specialists in the ministry of health at one of the meeting said that epilepsy is curable.
He said, it is very pathetic to see a well trained medical practitioner making such statements which he said can mislead the whole nation.

Mihowa therefore urged medical practitioners in the ministry to make a research and some consultations before making such unruly statements to avoid the issue to be a playing ground.
