Zambia is reported to have been hit by power shortage following growing weeds which are said to have affected the Kafue River. The river serves as the main source of power for the Zambia Electricity Supply Corporation (Zesco) to the entire country.
The weeds have affected the flow of power and Zesco has lost 300 megawatts of electricity, a BBC report said on Wednesday. The state power utility was quoted in a statement saying Tuesday that it has set up machines to remove the growing weeds.
But Zambia’s government has described the situation from Zesco as negligence saying they could have worked on the growing weeds long time ago.
To control power in the country which has affected several mines due to the power cut, Zesco might import 250 megawatts of electricity from South Africa and Namibia. That is expected to cost $260,000.
