Kathalijne van Zutphen: South Africa

  1. Kathalijne van Zutphen
The people we meet in this series are all people one could see walking down the Company Garden's, the main road in Muizenberg or anywhere in Cape Town on any given day.
Portrait of an immigrant- wishes to remain anonymous. Photo: Kathalijne van Zutphen
They either play into an image like the grinderman in Langa or are the opposite like perhaps the white boy in a colored children's home, they are either new to the country like the anonymous man from Zimbabwe or their families have lived in South Africa for centuries like the people from Lebanon or the father and daughter sitting on their couch at home. They all have their own personal demons to contend with, their struggles to overcome and their own victories to celebrate, most were failed by the system or the new politics but whatever their backgrounds may be, they are all tied together in their determination to make their lives a little better.

These photos were taken during my 3 months stay in Cape Town in 2007 and in March/April of 2008.
