Kenya denies arm deal with China
- Posted on Friday 8 February 2008 - 15:37Evans Wafula, AfricaNews reporter in Nairobi, KenyaThe Government has refuted claims by opposition Orange Democratic Movement that the Government was engaged in a suspicious arms deal with China.
Led by party Secretary-General professor Peter Anyang Nyongo, ODM accused the Government of planning to arm militias to cause mayhem in opposition strong holds.
In a correspondence obtained by the ODM, the Permanent Secretary for Internal Security, Mr Cyrus Gituai, is noted to have instructed China National Aero-Technology International Engineering Corporation, within the Chinese Trade Department, to supply Kenya with unspecified arms, ammunition and spares.
In another correspondence between the PS and a Mr Zhao Shoutang, the director of Chinese Trade Department, the payment for the arms was to be directed through the Bank of China, as a guarantee.
The Government was to transact the sale through the Kenya Commercial Bank Head Office branch at Kencom House quoted The Standard News paper.
Internal Security minister, Prof George Saitoti, denied that the Government was sponsoring militia groups with instructions to cause trouble in the country.
When contacted with AfricaNews.com in Nairobi, military spokesperson Bongita Bongeri denied having any information about a deal to purchase arms from China.
The accusation comes barely three months after China announced that it will assist Kenya to modernizing its armed forces.
Last November, Chinese Defence Minister Gen. Cao Gangcuan announced that China will work together with the Government in support modernize the armed forces by holding joint combat training and supply of modern equipments.
Kenya has commended China's efforts to support the ongoing modernization of the Kenya Armed Forces, noting that the support would improve the forces' ability to ensure security along the borders.
