Kenya: Kibaki meets Odinga tonight
- Posted on Thursday 24 January 2008 - 14:43Dennis Itumbi, AfricaNews reporter in Nairobi, KenyaThe diplomatic efforts aimed at breaking th political impasse between President Mwai Kibaki and opposition leader Raila Odinga seemed to be gaining crucial ground with a face to face meeting between the two protagonists scheduled for this evening.
A brief media advisory emailed from the Nairobi United Nations Office to newsrooms says, ¨the Chairman of the African Union Eminent African Personalities, wishes to inform you that today Thursday 24 January at 4:30pm, there will be a meeting amongst Mr Kofi Annan, President Mwai Kibaki and Hon.Raila Odinga at the office of the President, Harambee House.¨
A similar initiative when Ghanian President John Kuffor was in the country failed to take off, but this one appears set to take place.
This will be the first time President Kibaki will be using his official government office at the Office of the President since he first ascended to power in 2003.
