Zimbabwean police on Thursday arrested Tendai Biti, a key opposition figure accusing him of breaching sections of the Electoral Act. Biti, the Secretary General of the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) had been in exile in South Africa.

He was arrested on arrival at the HarareInternationalAirport after midday on Thursday.  He was immediately escorted into a waiting police vehicle, and it was not immediately clear which police station he was taken to.

“The Secretary General has been arrested at the airport upon arrival,” said MDC spokesperson Nelson Chamisa. He would not elaborate, saying he was still to confirm the charges.

But as reports started pilfering in that Biti would be returning home on Thursday, the police indicated they wanted to “question him about the possibility that he broke electoral laws”.

The police argued that Biti breached the Electoral Act on March 30 when he publicised results of the March 29 harmonised elections before the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) had made an official announcement. ZEC is the official elections administrator.

Biti and his party however argued that ZEC was the first to announce the results as all results they (the MDC) were announcing were actually based on figures displayed outside polling stations by ZEC officers.

Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) chief spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Wayne Bvudzijena would not confirm nor deny Biti’s arrest.

“What I can only say is that the police are keen to question him about the possibility that he breached the country’s electoral laws in March. I will come back to you after investigations,” said Bvudzijena.

In earlier reports today, Biti was quoted as predicting his arrest.
