Zambian cornered in Malta heroin scam

  1. A Zambian man has been arrested and charged for allegedly conspiring to traffic 500 grammes of heroin and possessing cannabis.

Isaac Unigwe pleaded not guilty to conspiring to traffic 500 grammes of heroin when he appeared before Magistrate Claire Stafrace Zammit in Malta, United Kingdom.

Unigwe, who resides in Pembroke on the northern coast of Malta was also charged with possession and distribution of the drug on 22 July last year.
Reports from Malta say Unigwe was also charged with possessing a cannabis plant and cannabis resin in the past months.

He was granted bail against a deposit of ¤5,000.

Malta’s Police inspector Pierre Grech prosecuted while Dr Roberto Montalto appeared for the Unigwe.

    Genital scam
Unigwe’s court appearance comes closely with the conviction of a Zambian woman, Alice Mulonda Sandi for concealing 303.6 grammes of cocaine in her genitals.

Meanwhile, Sandi’s co-accused who had earlier pleaded not guilty to drug trafficking by concealing the illicit drug in her private parts has also been sentenced to five years in prison with hard labour.

Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) spokesperson, John Nyawali told Africa News Friday that Sara Chikwanda of Ndola, who was jointly arrested with Sandi has been slapped with 5 year jail term.

The use of cocaine or cannabis is illegal in Zambia but the trend of trafficking has continued to grow at alarming levels, a move the DEC says is undermining investor perception in Africa’s largest copper producer.
