Zambia seeks brotherly AU tips

    Zambian president Rupiah Banda sought some advice from Malawian counterpart, Bingu wa Mutharika, on how best the African Union (AU) can help the once copper rich landlocked country.

    Mutharika, current AU chairperson, met Banda in camera at the New State House in Lilongwe Monday, did not comment anything when Banda returnded.

    "I have always said I would meet Mutharika when need arises," said Banda at Kamuzu International Airport on arrival.

    "AU has aksed me to discuss with Mutharika but I can not pre-empt since I have not yet briefed him," he said.

    "The Lusaka Times of Zambia reported: "There are a number of issues that President Banda is tomorrow expected in Malawi for urgent consultative talks with his Malawian counterpart wa Mutharika who is also Chairperson for the African Union (AU). Banda, Chairperson of the International Conference of the Great Lakes Region will be meeting wa Mutharika in his capacity as AU chairperson.

    On return to Zambia in the afternoon, Banda said he had bilateral talks with wa Mutharika as regards projects in Malawi being undertaken by the Chinese adding that the projects would be of benefit to Zambia.

    He was accompanied to Malawi by Foreign Affairs Minister Kabinga Pande and some senior government officials. Mr. Jere said Mr. Banda and his delegation are expected to return back to Lusaka the same day.
