Zambia Signs-US$102million Deal With Global Fund

  1. The Global Fund and the Zambian government have signed a new agreement of 102 million United States dollars equivalent to-K500 billion, for HIV programs to be implemented by the Churches Health Association of Zambia.

The implementation of this grant agreement will focus on prevention of mother to child transmission of HIV, male circumcision, expanding and sustaining HIV treatment, reducing new infections and maintaining a high coverage of impact mitigation activities to alleviate the economic and social consequences of the epidemic.

The grant will also strengthen counselling and testing and community based HIV treatment adherence.

The grant is a consolidation of four global fund grants, under the new single stream of funding mechanisms which allows the country to better coordinate and implement the programs in partnership with the ministry of health and technical and funding partners in Zambia.

The funding which will provide financing until December 2014 will allow for counselling and testing of over 400,000 people, antiretroviral treatment for about 77 thousand adults and conduct about 84 thousand male circumcisions.

Speaking during the signing of the agreement in Lusaka today, Health minister Joseph Kasonde says the signing of the single stream financing grant is an investment in the improvement of the quality health services and consequently the lives of the people of Zambia.

Dr. Kasonde says his ministry remains committed to ensuring that systems and structures are strengthened for improved financial management and expenditure accountability.

And global fund head of the grant management programmes division, Mark Edington has observed that the new grant will increase global fund investments of high impact interventions that will help Zambia reach universal access of HIV treatment.

Since inception, the Global fund has approved 662 million United States dollars of grants to Zambia for AIDS, Tuberculosis and malaria and 428 million United States dollars for program implementation.
