The opposition leader of Zambia's United Party for National Development (UPND), Hakainde Hichilema, has been placed under house arrest as a by-election was taking place at the Milanzi constituency. Hichilema has been accused of fanning violence and causing anarchy and has been under house arrest since Thursday.
AfricaNews reporter in Zambia, Sanday Chongo Kabange, reports that the opposition has condemned the action and said such actions are indications to what is expected to happen in the next general elections.
The election sanctioned, as a result of the death of legislator (MP) Reuben Chisanga-Banda early this year.
Sanday said the by-elections were conducted in a peaceful atmosphere and there were no report of violence.
The results are expected on Friday and Sanday said the opposition is widely expected to win because they mounted a very strong campaign.
