ZAMBIA IS STILL SAFE FOR BUNGEE JUMPING

  1. Authorities in Zambia have maintained that the country is still a safe tourist destination offering Bungee Jumping.
Immediate past Zambian Tourism Minister Given Lubinda has assured tourists world over that the sport can be carried out with no fears by those keen to engage in the breathtaking activity.
An accident on the Victoria Falls Bridge standing over one of the 8 wonders of the world; the Victoria Falls which is a regular sport for bungee jumping, occurred on New Year's Eve, leaving 22-year-old Australian lady Erin Langworthy with a fractured collar bone and severe bruises.

The Bungee rope in the accident snapped after the courageous young Australian made the dive going down 111meters off one of the longest natural bungee jumping sites falling head-first into the Zambezi River.

Despite having both her feet tied, Erin miraculously managed to swim in the crocodile infested river through the strong waves and got to the Zimbabwean side where she was momentarily treated and later evacuated to South Africa for thorough treatment.

Interestingly, Erin who has spoken out on the incident that has made headlines in the international media says she would still bungee again!
Two days after the unfortunate accident, the former Zambian Tourism Minister-Lubinda- took to the bridge and undertook a bungee jump to prove its safety.
"I came here to prove that the Bungee jumping activities are safe," Lubinda told the local press. "I have done the slides and swinging because I have confidence in the activities. Let everyone come and do it." Lubinda added.
The extreme sport has been temporarily been suspended to establish what led to the accident.
Clement Mukwasi Shearwater Adventures spokesman confirmed the temporal suspension of the sport. “This was to allow the auditors, management and crew the opportunity to analyse the causes of the broken cord and review the new system and procedures without distractions." He said.
Tourism is one of the sources of GDP revenue earnings for both Zambia and Zimbabwe, the two countries expected to co-host the 2013 World Tourism Organisation General Assembly.
