Young leaders take the bull by the horns

BONG COUNTY, Liberia. For 5 days beginning March 18 – 23, a group of young African leaders come together to add value to the lives of their brothers and sisters in post-war countries. Under the auspices of AFYUL –African Youths Unite for Liberia, the change project has been designed for 50 (fifty) ex-child combatants (male and female) between the ages of 16 and 28 in Bong County, Liberia. It is aimed at rehabilitating the minds of ex-child combatants thereby giving them the skills necessary to make them change agents and contributors to the rebuilding of Liberia.

These young leaders have come to understand the need for the African continent to grow together, as roots meshing beneath a forest and acknowledge the fact that for the future to be healthy; those who are young must be strong and able. They believe that if Africa can be a better place, it starts from the young generation saying NO to war and helping to rebuild our Nations.

Gaining deep insight into the devastating effects of the war in Liberia, from Baysah Corvah (a member of the group and a Liberian youth who experienced the war 1st hand), young African leaders were inspired to unite for Liberia.

The 14 member group represents the largest and most culturally diverse of all the groups which were formed at the 5th Annual African Business Leader's Forum (ABLF 2007). The conference was hosted by the Ghana @ 50 Secretariat and held in the ancient city of Accra, Ghana in October 2007.

Backed by a highly specialized and professional Board of Advisors, AFYUL is poised to raise a generation of youth change agents out of ex-child combatants who have what it takes to accelerate the socio-economic growth and stability of Liberia with veritable impact in the next five years.
