   Bogoria National Reserve and Samburu National Reserve are two wildlife areas situated in the Rift Valley of North Eastern Kenya.

   

   From Nakuru, the rift valley drops 900 mtr on a 18 km descent to sweltering deserts and semi -deserts that mark Lake Bogoria, north of the equator. The 34 km long saline and alkaline lake, is a Ramsar site. It is situated on an altitude of between 1000 and 1600 mtr with thermal steam jets and geysers boiling out of the rocky ground along its western shores,  on its eastern shore is the wall of the Laikipia escarpment, 2440 mtr high. Lake Bogoria offers spectacular sights, you can watch a great bird show, when sometimes more than one million lesser flamingos flock the area. 
   
   The Samburu National Reserve, more north, along the great north road through Wamba, Isiolo and Archer’s Post, near the Lololokwe mountain (1980 mtr) and 350 km from Nairobi, is the home land of the Samburu tribe. It was one of the places where George and Joy Adamson raised the lioness Elsa , featuring in the movie ‘Born Free’. A vast number of wildlife species, mammals, reptiles and birds, can be found in the beautiful scenery, on the north bank of the Ewaso Nyiro River. Big herds of African elephants come to drink and bath, reticulated giraffes eat from the acacia trees, lions on hunt for a catch can be watched at close range.
   
   These areas are well worth to visit while on a Kenya safari.

   Nature lovers should take note. Both national reserves are some of the few protected areas in Africa where the animals can roam with less fear of being hunted down. The vast open ranges and roaming creatures should appeal to people longing for a touch of nature.
