WAFU Cup: Nigeria in opening win

    After beging camping only on Tuesday, Nigeria’s home based Super Eagles led by Coach Samson Siasa was up to a winning start when they defeated their Liberian counterparts by 1-0 in the West African Football Union WAFU Nations Cup holding in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, south western Nigeria.

    The Thursday win by Nigeria marked the commencement of the new 2nd division WAFU competition which drew six home based teams from various west African countries, after Mali and Sengal pulled of the tournament due to personal logistic reasons.

    Nigeria’s goal in the opener came in the first from Ekhigo Ehiosu following a back to back pass with fellow foraward Osas Okoro. Ehiose constituted a major trouble for the Liberian side led by Coach Thomas Kodjo.

    The second half saw the Liberians coming really strong and better than the first half. Number 4 shirted Patrick Wleh was the danger man who tormented the Nigerian side on several occasions but with no goal to show for it.

    Ghana, Gambia, Togo and Niger are other countries participating in the WAFU competition.
