However, the acquisition has witnessed series of problems. The transaction has been characterized by demonstrations from pressure groups and quasi-political organizations for and against the sale.
Three hours of heated debate in Parliament preceded the ratification of the bill for the sale of Ghana Telecom. The Minority side of the House led by the opposition National Democratic Congress contended that government is being given a raw deal but the ruling New Patriotic Party countered that it is in the best interest of the country. 124 MPs voted for the sale against 76 who objected.
The Minority Leader of Parliament, Mr. Alban Bagbin told AfricaNews: “We are not against the sale of Ghana Telecom but we believe
Ghana is being cheated in the whole process. Vodafone’s offer is too small to warrant what they are getting. We don’t know why higher bidders like Telecom South
Africa were rather sidelined.”
However,
Ghana’s Minister of Finance and Economic Planning, Mr. Kwadwo Baah-Wiredu, stated that government is serving the best interest of the nation.
Baah-Wiredu told Parliament: “We are aware of the political implications of everything...Mr. Speaker let us move forward, Ghana has got one of the best deals. AfricaNews has learnt that directors of Vodafone
UK are expected in the country in the next few days to seal the deal with the Government of Ghana.
