Unnecessary competition suffocating Malawian businesses


  1. Malawian small scale businessmen have cried foul over what they have described as ‘unhealthy business competition’ which they believe is also derailing business and economic growth in the country.
    The business gurus said in separate interviews, the business terrain was not healthy in Malawi following the tendency of multinational businesses of venturing into small businesses that can be run by small Malawian entrepreneurs.
    Mathews Mpofu administrative officer at Pamthunzi Enviro- business and Landscaping said Malawi was a viable business destination, but he was quick to point that unfair trade completion was derailing business growth in the country.
    He said with proper trading guidelines, Malawian businesses had the potential of exporting to the overseas markets.
    Concurring with Mpofu, Laston Mulingo of Unique surgicals said Malawian small scale businesses were being suffocated as a result of unnecessary competition from larger multinational ventures.
    He said many multinational companies that had gone into the Malawian business scene as investors were going into trading activities suffocating the local small scale entrepreneurs.
    Malawian business maginet, Mark Katsonga Phiri challenged the Small scale business entrepreneurs to make feasibility studies before venturing into business.
    He said while the Malawi government had put in necessary structures to make the business environment conducive for the small scale businesses, many businesses were failing because they lucked administration skills.
    Katsonga formerly a legislator in the Malawi parliament said while the Malawian government had put in place various loan schemes for the small scale enterprises, business and trading activities in the country were not blossoming.
