Ugandan third in Stop TB Partnership awards

  1. A Ugandan Journalist Evelyn Lirri has come third in the Stop TB Partnership Award for Excellence in Reporting on Tuberculosis for 2010 in the category of low and income country.
According to a press release from the Stop TB Partnership, Lirri pocketed US$ 1,000 for coming third in the category which saw the first prize of US$ 3,000 go to Bharathi Ghanashyam of India with her blog story “Children and TB – the diagnostic challenges.
Lirri came third having published a feature story “Tuberculosis is curable but is still a silent killer in Uganda,” which was published in the Saturday Monitor.
Her story challenges her country to do more to tackle its TB and TB/HIV epidemics.
The award which is supported by the Lilly MDR-TB partnership recognizes outstanding reporting and commentary in print and on the web that materially increases the public’s knowledge and understanding of tuberculosis and multidrug – resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) in countries affected by the disease.
The partnership confers first, second and third prizes in two categories for Journalists from low and middle income countries and those from high-income countries.
In the High-income country category, Michael Specter of the United States came first with his feature which appeared in the New Yorker titled “A Deadly Misdiagnosis.”
The Stop TB Partnership is leading the way to a world without tuberculosis, a disease that is curable but still kills three people every minute.
The past years has seen Lungi Langa from South Africa coming out top in 2010 with Malawi’s Brian Ligomeka and Charles Mpaka scooping top positions in 2008 and 2009 respectively.
