Uganda:Twin Bombs Kill 23 in Kampala

  1. According to the BBC 23 people have died in twin explosions in the Ugandan capital-Kampala.The explosions hit a Rugby club and a restaurant as patrons were watching the world Cup final match between Spain and The Netherlands.

At the restaurant,it is believed that 13 people died there while others were seriously injured from the explosions.10 more people died at the Rugby club. Inspector General of Police Kal Kayihura told AFP that the bombs were targeting World Cup crowds. He also told AP that Al-Shabab Militants of Somali could be responsible for the twin explosions.

Somali militant Groups like the Hizbul-Islam had banned the world Cup in Somalia-No one was to watch any match. The group had warned football fans that they would be publicly punished if found watching the matches.BBC reported in June that two people had been killed during raids on homes of people suspected to be watching the matches and many others were arrested during the World Cup matches.

The Kampala twin explosions comes one month after six people died in Nairobi and 75 others injured in an explosion at a political rally in Nairobi in June. The “No” rally team that was targeted in the explosion is opposed to the passing of the new constitution. The similarity between the explosions in Kenya and Uganda is that they were duo.The Kampala one being a twin attack and the Kenyan one taking place 30 minutes a part.

Investigators in Kenya have not come up with new leads so far and no one has been arrested or claimed responsibility for the attacks despite the Kenya Police offering a Euro 5,000 award to anyone with information.Israeli Security agents jetted to Kenya in mid June to help in the investigations regarding the bombings but so far-no success.
