American aid worker has been freed in the Sudanese war-torn region of Darfur, the Foreign Ministry said. Flavia Wagner, 35, who was working for U.S. charity Samaritan's Purse in Darfur, arrived in Khartoum on Monday.

Armed men had held Wagner since May for ransom in Sudan's west. The armed men kidnapped the woman and two Sudanese working for the same charity.

Samaritan's Purse said it has provided $83.7 million in assistance to Sudan over the past decade.

"The negotiators from the government of Sudan used their influence to gain her freedom. We are thrilled," Ken Isaacs, vice president of programs and government relations at Samaritan's Purse, said.

Attacks and kidnaps against aid workers and foreigners for ransom are common phenomenon in western Sudan.

Law and order in the Western Region of Darfur has collapsed since 2003 when black African rebels began to take arms against the Sudan government.

The ongoing conflicts in Darfur has killed some 300,000 people and displaced more than 2.7 million others, according to a UN report. Sudan however said only 10,000 people are dead.

In May, violence killed 600 people in Darfur, the worst monthly figure since the deployment of peacekeepers in 2008.
