US, UK condemn bomb attacks on Uganda

    The US President Barack Obama is calling the deadly bomb blasts that killed 64 persons including foreigners in Uganda last night "deplorable and cowardly," a spokesman said. "The president is deeply saddened by the loss of life resulting from these deplorable and cowardly attacks.

    “.. and sends his condolences to the people of Uganda and the loved ones of those who have been killed or injured," National Security Council spokesman Mike Hammer said in a statement.

    "The United States is ready to provide any assistance requested by the Ugandan government."

    Hammer said the United States was in contact with its embassy in Kampala and was in touch with the Federal Bureau of Investigation regarding requests for assistance from Uganda's government.

    In a related development, UK Foreign Secretary, William Hague said these were cowardly attacks during an event that was widely seen as a celebration of African unity.

    In a statement, Hague noted that, “I condemn them in the strongest possible terms. The UK will stand with Uganda in fighting such brutal acts of violence and terror."

    "I was deeply shocked to hear of the bomb attacks that took place in Kampala last night, which left many people dead and injured. I send my heartfelt sympathies to President Museveni and the people of Uganda, in particular the families and friends of those who lost their lives, and wish a full and speedy recovery to those who were injured,” said.
