UN worried over West Africa military coups

    The United Nations Security Council has expressed concern over the recent unconstitutional change of government in parts of Africa and its negative impact especially on the welfare and development of these countries. The West African sub region has become home to military coups in recent times.

    The region which is made up of15 member states (West Africa)has witnessed three military coups in less than 18 months which forces the African Union, the region main body to describe the situation in a their communiqué as “the resurgence of the phenomenon of coup d’état, which constitutes a threat to peace and security on the continent…”

    The President of Mauritania Chiekh Abdallahi was topple in a military coup in that country following his decision to sack his head of army guards in early November followed by another military coup in Guinea after the death of former President Lansana Conte himself a former military man and the recent killing of Burkina Faso’s President João Bernardo Vieira.

    Ambassador Vitaly Churkin of Russia said in a statement read at the UN Security Council on Tuesday that the Security Council acknowledge the effort made so far by AU and sub-regional bodies to prevent ‘coups’ in the region whiles stressing that “the importance of expeditiously restoring constitutional order including through open and transparent elections,”
