The United Nations-backed Special Court for Sierra Leone has announced on Wednesday that they will stream live proceedings of supermodel Naomi Campbell testimony at the Charles Taylor trial on Thursday to their facility in New England Freetown.
    Naomi Campbell
An SMS message from Peter Anderson, Head of Public Affairs section of the Special Court to AfricaNews read: “Special Court - Naomi Campbell will testify tomorrow [Thursday]. Streaming begins 7:30 at courthouse.”

The British catwalk icon is accused of receiving what is tagged as blood diamonds from former Liberian President Charles Ghankay Taylor during a meeting organized by former South African President Nelson Mandela in that country. Over the past years, Campbell has been distancing herself from the court.

The Prosecution said Campbell’s testimony would support their argument that the former Liberian warlord lied when he said during his testimony that he never possessed rough diamonds.

A ruling on Wednesday read: “The prosecution has shown that there is at least a good chance that the information to be provided by Ms. Campbell would be of material assistance to its case.”

Campbell will take the witness stand after she was subpoena by the court earlier.

Taylor is standing trial at the Special Court for Sierra Leone in The Hague on 11 counts of various war crimes and crimes against humanity. He is accused among other things of exchanging weapons for diamonds to the Revolutionary United Front Rebel Group. His trial was transferred to The Hague citing security reasons in the West Africa region.

The Special Court for Sierra Leone was set up to try those that bear the greatest responsibility in Sierra Leones civil war.
