    The United Nations has awarded peace keeping medals to 120 Nigeria police officers for their meritorious service in Liberia. The Head of the UN Mission in Liberia (UNMIL), Ellen Margrethe Loj, commended Nigeria's peacekeepers for being "well-equipped to provide creative and home-grown expert solutions to complex global challenges," in international peacekeeping.

    The envoy spoke in the Liberian central city of Gbarnga, while conferring the award to the 120 officers which included 18 females of the Nigerian Formed Police Unit (NFPU) in Liberian central city of Gbarnga. Ellen Loj, who is a Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the UN, observed that "Nigerians always came to peacekeeping operations with knowledge, skills and experience laced with insights and depth as rich and diverse as their country."

    The Nigerian military is well-noted for selfless service to the UN and now, the contributions from the Nigeria police have begun to win commendation.

    The Nigeria police have participated in about 20 peacekeeping missions since 1960, placing the country the fifth among the 130 UN police-contributing countries. In the category of troop-military-contribution to the UN, Nigeria is currently in the fourth position.

    Present at the medal presentation were top Nigerian government and UN officials, including Assistant Inspector-General of Police Suleiman Fakai and Nigeria's Ambassador in Liberia, Ebenezer Adigun and many others.
