UN Sports Envoy for Peace in South Africa


  1. According to the UN News Centre, Wilfried Lemke, the Special Adviser to the Secretary-General on Sport for Development and Peace arrived in South Africa on Tuesday ahead of the world cup finals.Mr.Lenke,is going to attend the Football for Hope festival in the township of Alexandra in Johannesburg.

    According to the UN;

    'Football for Hope is the joint initiative of the world football governing body, FIFA, and streetfootballworld that represents football’s commitment to social development. Recognising the power of sport, and football in particular, to be a powerful tool to promote ideals of development and peace.'

    It further states that;

    ' Football for Hope aims to assist the UN in achieving the eight social development and poverty eradication targets known as the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by 2015.'

    While in South Africa,he will attend a discussion organised by UN HABITAT on the successes of projects and programs in South Africa.He will visit the Soccer for Hope centre, an initiative of the German development agency GTZ as part of its Youth Development through Football project .Apart from that,he will also visit the Nike Centre in Soweto, a modern training centre where 1,200 teams and 15,000 footballers play each year.

    “There is no doubt that this World Cup has been a tremendous success for South Africa and for the continent as a whole. It has also opened the floodgates for the Sport for Development and Peace Movement, and I am incredibly proud of the work that has been done by so many actors – in particular UN entities – to capitalize on this opportunity to trigger positive social change through sport,” Mr.Lenke said.
