`` I am encouraged by the constructive spirit that has prevailed throughout my discussions so far, `` Ban said at a city hotel.

Ban who is on a one day tour of the country met with opposition leader Raila Odinga after earlier talking with president Mwai Kibaki in Ethiopia where he is attending an African Union meeting.

Four people were killed yesterday in riots that broke out after a second ODM MP was shot dead yesterday in what Raila says was an ``assassination`` targeting 8 members of the opposition.

He said the shooting of David Kimutai Too was a government plot to shore up the number of government MPs in parliament where the opposition holds a slim majority.

Ban praised Kenya for being a role model for other African countries through the years and urged political leaders to look beyond their party and personal interests.

Kenya's sudden slide into chaos after a disputed Dec. 27 poll has damaged one of Africa's most promising economies and shattered its image as a stable country.

More than 800 people have lost their lives and 300,000 people are internally displaced.

Ban decried that the security situation in the country has made it increasingly difficult for aid agencies to operate in the country.

`The killings must stop, the violence must end for the sake of the Kenyan people, for the sake of Kenya,`` he said.
