U-17: Eaglets soar, lead group

  1. The Golden Eaglets has emerged the winner of the group of death in the on-going U-17 FIFA World Cup in Nigeria.

The boys who started the tournament with a come back 3-3 draw with Germany, defeated the tournament favourite, Argentina by 2-1. The South American side led in the early minutes although the African boys quickly equalised with a flicker volley by Omoh Ojabu in the fifth minute from a corner kick.

Played at the Tafa Balewa Stadium, Bauchi, the defending champion looked strong as they tackled the Argentines who had already assured of going to the second phase of the competition having won their first two matches. Nigerians, who had drawn one match and won one, must beat Argentina to be assured of a place in the second round.

The game then cooled down after a while as Nigeria lost the scorer to knee injury. He was replaced in the 31st minute with Sani Emmanuel who missed a golden chance to score just two minutes after coming on.

Nigeria would have increased the tally but for several misses both from close and long ranges, especially Azeez's dangerous snap shot from 30 yards around the post.

After these unpardonable misses, the Golden Eaglets got the breakthrough when Federico Rasmussen dragged down Olarewaju Kayode in the penalty box. Emmanuel took the penalty and fired home a well taken spot kick which gave the host a deserved lead.

Although the Eaglets played well against the South Americans, they need to show more discipline and determination in other to retain the trophy, for leading one’s group does not guarantee a success in the knock out stage.

The win puts Nigeria on top of the group with seven points, Argentina comes second with six points, Germany is in third position with four points and must wait to see if their four points are enough to take them to the second round as the four best third place. Honduras has no point and on their way home.
