The body charged with the organisation of elections in Cameroon, Elections Cameroon, ELECAM, has made public the list of 21 candidates qualified to run for the presidential election set for October 9, 2011. The board chairman of ELECAM, Dr Fonkam Samuel Azu'u made known the qualified candidates for the October presidential election during a press briefing in Yaoundé on Friday 9 September 2011.

The board during its session of last week scrutinised the nomination files of the 52 candidates and rejected 30 of them.

Dr Fonkam Azu’u explained that, “30 out of the 52 candidates’ nomination files were rejected for a number of reasons such as the applications duly signed by candidates not having their legalised signatures, lack of a certificate issued by the Taxation Department, certificate of the deposit of FCFA 5 million or other conditions which were not fulfilled.”

He disclosed that the electoral board received a letter from one of the candidates withdrawing his file.

Candidates whose files the Electoral Board of ELECAM rejected, may deposit claims at the Supreme Court acting as the Constitutional Council for examination and judgement.

Dr Fonkam Azu’u said that in accordance with the law, candidates whose files were rejected have been notified and copies of the rejection letters have been forwarded to the Constitutional Council as provided by law.

It is worth noting that for the first time in the history of Cameroon, two women, Dang Esther of the branch for the Integral Reconstruction of Cameroon and Walla Edith Kahbang are running for president in the presidential election.
