ZIMBABWE’s tourism sector has this year grown at an average annual rate of seven percent, the Minister of Tourism and Hospitality has said.
Tourism Minister Walter Muzembi was speaking at the annual National Tourism Awards, which was hosted in the resort town of Victoria Falls recently.
The awards were meant to honour individuals and corporates that contributed significantly to the growth of the tourism and hospitality sector between 2009 and 2010.
Minister Muzembi thanked the various stakeholders for their invaluable contribution to the improved performance.
"It is encouraging to note that these Awards are coming at a time the sector has witnessed significant growth of about 7 percent annual growth rate.
This is no mean achievement taking into cognisance numerous yesteryear challenges faced by the country that inhibited the sector’s development.
"However your resilience and continued efforts to revive the Tourism economy; justifies the holding of this event.
The current sector transformation, increased capital investments and the acknowledgement by Government that tourism is one of the four pillars of the national economy, spells out that we are all winners and champions of tourism," he said.
The awards came at a time when Zimbabwe was joining the rest of the world in commemorating World Tourism Day, which this year was running under the theme: "Tourism and Biodiversity".
Minister Mzembi added that the country - as a tourist destination - still faces numerous challenges, key among them minimal investment in infrastructure development.
Other challenges include road networks, Information and Communication Technology, new product development, access into the destination and financial resources to increase promotional activities in both traditional and emerging source markets.
He pledged increased input from his Ministry to change the fortunes of the sector and thanked organisers of the awards for recognition of key contributions.
