Togo: President’s brother in attempted coup

    Togolese authorities have exhibit a cache of arms and ammunition in the capital Lome which they said belongs to the brother of President Faure Gnassingbe. Kpatcha Gnassingbe former defense minister was accused of trying to overthrow his brother following a shoot out at his residence which left two dead.

    Faure Gnassingbe came to power in 2005 following the death of his father one time Africa’s longest serving head of state Gnassingbe Eyadema.

    According to the BBC the relationship between the two has become ‘sour’ in recent times whiles many Togolese say the accusation did not come as a surprise to them.

    Kpatcha Gnassingbe was relieved from his post as defense minister in a cabinet reshuffle in 2007 without any explanation. Among the weapons that were displayed includes AK-47s, military vehicles, tear-gas and bullet proof vests all allegedly belongs to Kpatcha Gnassingbe.

    Kpatcha who has denied any wrong doing will be charged with illegal possession of heavy weapons to threaten the state according to the country’s state prosecutor.

    The two brothers are from different mothers.
