Togo: Opposition declares victory

    The opposition leader in Togo, UFC's Jean-Pierre Fabre, has declared that he has won the elections held in that country. He has therefore advised President Gnassingbe to respect the will of the people and lead a smooth transition. The government has subsequently declared a curfew through a radio announcement warning Togolese to go home by 18hrs GMT Friday.

    AfricaNews reporter in Togo Kofi Agyepong says: “There is an uneasy calm in here as citizens are scared that what happened around 2005 might be revisited.”

    It is expected that results may start trickling in soon and European Union observer team are expected to make an official pronouncement early Saturday.

    Kofi Agyepong reports that information is not forth coming. “Nobody wants to talk us; the government and the Independent Electoral Commission are not speaking to us.” He said the citizenry are going about their normal business as if there has not been any election in that country.

    The opposition has already voiced its concerns about irregularities in the election “if the results do not go in favour of the opposition, I have the strongest believe that they might reject the final results,” he added.

    Currently, there has not been any result out yet and radio stations are also not having any discussions on the elections. “They are just playing music” Agyepong added.
