Three Africans have been shortlisted for this year's FIFA Player of the Year Award. They are Ivory Coast's captain and Chelsea's striker Didier Drogba, Togo's and Arsenal's striker Emmanuel Adebayor and Cameroon and Barcelona striker Samuel Eto'o. Africa prepares to host the rest of the world in 2010.

Despite being sidelined for a longtime with injuries, Drogba has been outstanding for his country scoring vital goals and has also played a role for his Premier League side Chelsea who are currently second on the log.
Adebayor has also been in scintillating form at Arsenal and just last weekend, he scored two goals against West ham after coming in as a substitute. Though he has been at loggerheads with his country and missed some games in the 2010 joint World and Africa cup qualifiers, Adebayor has played a vital role to put his country through.
Cameroon’s Eto’o has also been in the best form for his country scoring more goals likewise at Barcelona.
Other players who have been nominated for the award include Christiano Ronaldo, Fernando Torres and Deco on the 23-man shortlist for the FIFA World Player of the Year Award, according to a BBC report.
The award to be decided by a poll of national team captains and coaches will see another shortlist of three revealed in December, with the winner announced at a ceremony in Zurich, Germany next year.
Last year’s winner of the award was Brazilian and AC Milan’s player Kaka. The list comprises three African players, three South Americans and 20 Europeans.
