  1. Liberia Closes border with Guinea


    The Liberian Government has ordered its border with Guinea closed following recent communal violence in Lofa which resulted in loss of lives and properties. - The Defense Minister Brownie Samukai announced his governmet's decision Friday saying the move is intended to curb entry of people in Liberia. The government is investigating cause of the recent riot involving rival members of the Mandingo and Lorma tribes and has also banned the use of single barrel guns in Lofa county. This common border is normally used by hunters.

  2. Calm restored in Northern Liberia


    Calm has been restored in the northwestern provincial capital of Voinjama in Liberia after violent clashes between rival Mandingo and Lorma tribes that left at least five people dead, dozens injured and thousands of dollars worth of property damaged. - The unrest which began last Friday in a nearby town, was sparked by the murder of a 23 year old woman of the Lorma tribe whose mutilated body was later found in a Madingo Community. She had earlier gone missing for days. This led to reprisal attacks from both sides in a conflict that soon began taking religious dimension, with Lormas attacking Muslim facilities and Madingoes burning down churches and Christian related institutions.     A senior senator in the National Legislature in Liberia said she is drawing up an impeachment proceeding against President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf for allegedly violating the Liberian constitution, when she recently called on her cabinet ministers to employ two persons each from her ruling Unity Party. - Senator Jewel Howard Taylor, wife of former President Charles Taylor, believes that the President's call which was made at a party convention a week ago, aims to promote segregation in employment, thus contradicting Article 8 of the Liberian Constitution which provides that job opportunities be given all Liberians regardless of creed, religion, political affiliation or social status.
