Im a 28 year-old black journalist based in the city of Durban in South Africa. My passion to become a journalist draws way back from high school. I paticipated in poetry writting and that developed my writting skills. I then after matric enrolled to study journalism with the Durban university of technology in 1999. Although I worked for radio as part of my in-service training programme, my passion was always with print media.
In 2005 I finally got myself a job at Sowetan Newspaper in Johaneesburg, where I worked as a general reporter. Somehow this felt like homecoming, I was realising that writting fulfilled me and gave me the platform to make a differerence in the issues and the people that I wrote stories about. Four years later working for the same publication, reading my work in the paper the following day, I still get butterflys in my stomach just like the day I published my very first story.
What still motivates me is a pat at the back from my boss, Mary Papayya everytime I deliver a good story. The guidance she offers whenever I am stuck.
Another fours from now, I want to see myself offering training to journalism students and starting my own community newspaper .
