My name is David Mbuthia Mwangi and my nick name is Identitie. I’m 25 years old, born on 4th may 1983 in a family of seven with four girls and three boys. Sadly our first born was a girl passed away. We also lost our mother after a long illness. She fought her battle, she came, saw and conquered she is my role model. We are all not employed including my father but our elder brother works in a jua kali garage i.e. its garage located in a temporary location alongside the road and small where they use manual tools to get the bread. Two of my sisters are married and the youngest lives with one of the plus child that our sister left behind. My father, the two brothers and I live in Mathare North estate which neighbours the commonly known Mathare Slums which is a few kilometers from the capital city Nairobi. Here poverty level is extremely and alarming high with most of its population being illiterate for there is no money to pay for their school fees and very few manage to get sponsors to educate them by billing their school bills. I and my few friends ran a small business where we offer washing and ironing services using hand and charcoal powered iron boxes which is the only source of income that runs my family. I was recently inaugurated in the Slum TV as one of its members which deals with shooting videos, photography and editing clips. The Slum-TV and its shootback project is to give the youths a chance to realize the talents and skills and make them profitable in their future lives. I also believe am a very talented in video shooting and photography, for the years that I’ve been in it the whole truth has revealed itself. The photos and the clips acts as a testimony to the kind of life people lead in the slums thus expressing their feelings, opinions and the kind of change they always long for to a more wider society and maybe the whole world. So I feel if given a good chance, facilities and support that is necessary I can do better and bring great change to this need of a bigger helping hand so that they can be people who rely on themselves. Some of my photos (20 pictures) featured in shoot back book published and launched in London in 1999 and its now available world wide. Apart from photography and video shooting, I also involve in painting and drawing since I love creativity. Participating in community work projects and coaching youth kids are the other activities I love doing for. I like helping people realize their goals and vision. Am currently coaching a team by the name of slum disciples which I believe will greately transform the living standards of the youth. Its salvation and I believe salvation is of two stages. 1st is wherby one accepts to be transformed body wise, mentally and spiritually and the 2nd stage is the whereby one is filled with the power to enable him more or do what he/she intends to and that is what I am trying to do and this is what am doing to these kids through coaching them and as it is written in the book of John 15:1-8 that we are there to glorify his name as HIS disciples. My motivation in video shooting and photography is to challenge the society by bringing change through educating people to realize the hard, harsh and crude life that most of the slum dwellers lead. Therefore I see and feel that my chips and photos as a means of enlighting and educating people about the washed lives in the slums, the untapped talents go unnoticed in the slums and more to it how we can change the environment in the slums and make it a better living place for mankind. I pray God that one day I will be in a position to start a project to teach photography to young kids which I think after they develop their skills in the field will help reduce the suffering people are facing in the slums. Most of it I would very much want to publish my own book (e.g. Like the SHOOTBACK BOOK) and also have a solo/own photo exhibition to displays my potential and work. Its my dream that one day if I get a sponsor or given a chance to participate in charity runs and like London, New York, Berlin or any other marathon to raise funds to help the needy children get their basic needs and may be also education. I also aim at helping many people learn more about the creator (God) through my work, for even the Bible in the book of Genesis 37:1-11 it says that “I will grow stronger physically, spiritually and emotionally for I want to do the work of God through taking pictures. To me these will help change the behavior and the ideologies of many who will be behind me and know what is expected of them and they can contribute in lending a helping hand to the less disadvantaged in the society. I hope this society will be able to formulate policies that will help to reduce the suffering of our brothers and sisters in the slum. Video shooting has helped me to be more creative and try to find the meaning of everything in life. I want to walk with God, following his ways and guidance, yes I will work for I know he even controls my steps I believe and I have faith in him for only through his mercies I will succeed.
