Changing Times of The Masai
- They've been known the world over as pastrolists, their only interest being their cattle and moving from one place to another in search of pasture for their animals. But since the drought of last year that left almost all their cattle dead, the Masai's in Namanga have changed from cattle farming to crop farming. Those who have engaged in this type of farming are so happy. Due to the short rains last year, their crops are doing well. They do not have to buy food; instead they are making a lot of money out of their farming on their shamba's. They do not have to move from place to place as have been in the past. - Residents of Trukana are up in arms with the Ethopian and Sudanese cattle raiders. They always live on the edge because of the attacts from these raiders and the only Police post that is near is almost 100 kilometers away. The Police station does not have vehicles to use even if there is an emmergency and rough terrian cannot help either. Young Trukana girls between the ages of 14-16 years are now training to use the gun - a tool that is in almost all Trukana homes for protection. Many households have been left without men to protect them and the community is worried that its loosing many of their men. - Kenya embraced Free Primary Education when it was introduced by President Kibaki in 2003. The program then attracted many donors who supported it and it has been going on despite allegations of corruption in the Education industry and many other challenges. The program was to help the poor in the rural areas to take their children to school and keep them off the streets. The main challenges the parents are facing especially the real poor people in the rural areas is that they cannot afford to buy school uniform for their children. - The Chief Mediator in Kenya's 2007 Post election violence Dr. Koffi Anan was Kenya to review the progress of the Coalition Government. He said that he was satisfied with the progress being made by the two Principals - President Mwai Kibaki and Prime Minister Raila Odinga in the running of the Government. He urged the two leaders to continue consulting each other, however he was concerned about corruption claims in the Gran Coalition Government.
